It's one thing to manage finances. But how can you manage that while organizing fundraisers, finding sponsors, and juggling a demanding academic schedule? That requires a great deal of commitment, expertise, and planning. Our VP of Finance & Fundraising, Emilie Solesby, has demonstrated that finance is more than numbers for Ferris AMA. It all comes down to individuals, enthusiasm, and preparation.
Emilie understood right away that this position was more than just a title; it was a chance to obtain practical experience in a field she intends to pursue after graduation. "I wanted to be more involved in AMA and gain experience in a field that interests me," she said. And involved she has been!
Crunching Numbers & Raising Funds
Emilie's work includes handling the AMA's budget, and she did not go into it blindly. "I looked at historical data, including past budgets and ledgers, and I spoke with members to get a feel for their interest in various fundraising activities." She discovered the sweet spot for efficient financial management by combining historical insights and present member involvement.
Fundraising, however, is where she really shines. One of her greatest triumphs? Over $500 was made for AMA from the Krispy Kreme fundraiser. However, motivating people to participate and feel enthusiastic about supporting the organization was more important than focusing only on financial gain. "I enjoy this event because it gets other members involved and excited to participate while raising funds for the RSO."
Overcoming Challenges & Learning on the Job
It's difficult to balance money, fundraising, coursework, and outside interests, and Emilie acknowledges that initially, the burden was difficult. "The main challenge was just learning all the different aspects of this role because you have to do a lot, and it is usually all happening at once." She did, however, find her groove and effectively handle a heavy workload with the assistance of AMA advisors, especially Kyle, the student advisor in the fall.
That platter was also filled. Emilie has been in charge of monitoring budgets, obtaining business sponsorships, planning fundraising events, enrolling members, and providing funding for significant AMA events such as ICC and the next gala. She attributes this to her "time management and organizational skills" but it has taken a lot of effort.
Looking Ahead: How AMA Prepares You for the Future
For Emilie, this role wasn't only about the present moment. It was an investment in her professional future. "It has given me hands-on experience working with money, which is great to have as I hope to have a career in Finance after I graduate from Ferris." Her practical experience will help her stand out in the job market.
But she's also learned the importance of leadership in addition to finance. "This role has really taught me how to be a leader and work with a team to achieve our goals." She has seized every chance to advance her career, whether it was in member recruitment, representing AMA at the College of Business Student Advisory Board meeting, or making important financial decisions.
Advice for Future Finance Leaders
Emilie has a few words of advice for those who will take her place in the future:
✔️ Ask a lot of questions: You can always learn something new.
✔️ Network: It is impossible to know who would be a possible sponsor.
✔️ Make a schedule and stick to it: Making a plan in advance is essential.
✔️ Have fun!: Finance is more than just numbers; it's about making a difference.
As she approaches graduation, Emilie is prepared to use the skills she has acquired in her future profession. But before she leaves, AMA is fortunate that her leadership, commitment, and smart thinking have all guided our financial and fundraising activities.
