February Member of the Month: Makenah Reed

When Makenah joined the American Marketing Association (AMA) this past fall, she was stepping into more than just a new club, she was stepping into a new chapter. After recently changing her major to marketing, she knew she wanted to build her network and strengthen her skills outside of the classroom. AMA felt like the perfect place to start.

One of her favorite memories so far has been the club’s trip to Cedar Point. Although the days were long, they were filled with laughter, connection, and the beginning of meaningful friendships within the organization. For Makenah, that trip marked the moment she truly began finding her place in AMA.

Since joining, AMA has impacted her in ways that go far beyond professional development. She has made new friends, challenged herself to step outside her comfort zone, and grown in confidence. A moment she is especially proud of was attending an AMA West Michigan event this month. Simply going felt like a big step, but she didn’t stop there, she pushed herself to connect with business professionals and engage in conversations that once would have intimidated her. Allowing herself to feel uncomfortable ultimately led to tremendous growth.

Through her involvement, Makenah has strengthened her confidence and communication skills. Before AMA, she was often hesitant to go out of her way to start conversations. While she continues to work on this, she has already seen significant improvement and credits the organization for helping her develop that courage.

Outside of AMA, Makenah has her own adventurous side. A fun fact many members may not know is that she traveled to five countries in just eleven days. Germany, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and even an unexpected seven-hour stop at a gas station in France after her bus broke down. It’s safe to say she knows how to embrace the unexpected.

If she had to describe AMA in three words, they would be “AMAzing,” encouraging, and fun. And when it comes to what reminds her most of the club? Donuts, thanks to the famous Krispy Kreme fundraisers and the monthly meeting treats, there really is no better answer.

Looking ahead, Makenah hopes to continue growing both personally and professionally. She wants to sharpen her marketing skills, learn what sets her apart, and keep pushing herself toward opportunities that shape her into the best version of herself.

Her advice to new or prospective members is simple but powerful: be open-minded. New experiences can feel uncomfortable, but that discomfort is often where the most meaningful growth happens.
